Yesterday was so surreal, like a nightmare that you just can’t quite wake up from. Today, I have an awareness of the void in my heart. Cooper was attacked by a blue heeler in my apartment complex. We rushed him to the vet. He had no feeling in any of his legs and was in critical condition. At 5pm we transported him to the overnight hospital where he would receive constant supervision. I felt so numb in the backseat of Scott’s car holding the box that he was lying in. Only able to move his eyes, he looked into mine and I repeated “I love you” about 100 times during that car ride. About ten minutes after we left, he took his final breath. I am completely devastated and heartbroken. This all seems so unfair and preventable. The owners are extremely irresponsible in that the dog was not on a leash and left free to roam around the pool area which specifically states that they are not permitted. My tattoo on my arm will always remind me of Cooper and that “we’ll all float on okay”, being that yesterday was the Modest Mouse concert. Throughout the past 7 years, Cooper has taught me many things about responsibility and caring for another breathing creature. He was my cuddle buddy and my little man. I hope that he is atop the most comfortable pile of pillows surrounded by tons of purple unicorns and bunny rabbits, with treats galore. I love you buddy and I will never.. ever forget you.
